Zening Guide/Walkthrough for Kongregate)
Intro
[Note: as of 2012 or so, this game is no longer available.]
To serious badge collectors like me, Zening is an interesting case. Even though the game's been out for two years, the medium badge has been awarded just over 10,000 times, which is much fewer than most hard badges, and the hard badge has been awarded just over 2,500 times, which is much fewer than almost all impossible badges. And those numbers include hackers. So a legitimate completion of Zening is very rare and pretty difficult.
Now, is it really that hard? Actually, no. The problem is that the game itself feels like it runs very slowly. Every level loads a movie before it begins, and the ingame animations are torturously slow and jerky. Plus, the game responds badly to mouse commands. So, although a huge amount of time isn't involved in completing it, I think most people who started this game simply didn't have the patience to complete much of it.
Anyway, there doesn't seem to be any exhaustive guide. There are a bunch of levels on youtube, but not all, and some levels seem to be more random than others. Note that my solutions aren't guaranteed to be the best or anything, but they should work. So I hope that this will come in handy to anyone who wants these rare badges.
General Tips
You don't need to worry about these when following a step-by-step guide for a level, but not all levels have step-by-step guides, because some are more random than others. And hey, you might want to try to complete the game yourself, without the walkthrough. These tips should come in handy.
- Be patient. In episodes 3 and 4 you only have 20 seconds to decide what move to make. Although this really isn't enough to check everything and think about the possibilities, it's not so short that you should be making quick instinctual judgments.
- Remember that you get two moves every turn, and each one can be a standard attack, a spell, or a movement. They don't even both have to be by the same character. So it helps to plan an entire turn before you do it, so that you can make the best use of this freedom. Remember that if one character attacks twice in a turn the second attack will deal less damage, so try not to do this unless it's really the best option you have.
- Whenever possible, pick off enemies one by one. It's better to kill one enemy unit than to deal damage to a few of them. Of course, you want to prevent the enemy from doing this to you too.
- Pay attention to the movement and attack patterns of each unit. It's always useful to know which units can kill from a distance and which need to get in close to deal any damage. And keep track of which units can only attack adjacent squares, and which can only attack diagonal squares.
- Heal often - most characters can be killed in a few hits (and sometimes even one!) so it's valuable to stay as high on health as you can. Plus, most healing spells only regenerate after a certain number of turns, so the earlier you use it, the earlier your next heal can be.
- Take a look at the available spells in each round before you begin. Watch for spells that affect only one enemy or a group (or the whole team), and work out the total damage. If a spell deals less damage than a standard attack would, don't bother with it.
Walkthrough for Story Mode
Episode I
Completing this episode will get you the medium badge. These levels don't seem to be random at all - if you do the same thing every time, so will the enemies. So just follow these steps and you should be fine. Keep in mind that these are by no means the only solutions (or even the best), so if you make a mistake don't assume you will fail.
All directions in this walkthrough will be given in terms of up/down/right/left (U/D/R/L). These are in terms of your screen - so a direction like U will actually be diagonal in terms of the game board. When I write something like D+DR, it means one square in the D direction and then one in the DR direction (but in one step).
Level 1
This stage functions as a tutorial for the game. Here we see our first two friendly units and our first enemy type.

- Katrina attack UR (kill), Katrina attack DR
- Katrina attack DR (kill), Katrina move UR

- Katrina move DR, Ben move DR
- Katrina attack DR twice
- Ben attack DR twice
- Katrina attack DR (kill), Ben attack DR (kill)
- Ben attack DR twice
- Ben attack DR (kill), Ben attack UR
- Ben attack UR twice
Level 4
We now have a new friendly character, Zara. She has a long-ranged attack, but much more importantly, attacking an enemy from a distance will create vines between the enemy and her. This will become incredibly useful later on, since you can kill an enemy without taking damage. It's important to notice that Zara can't directly heal herself, but her heal affects adjacent allies, so you can get the same effect.
- Zara move DL, Zara more UL
- Zara move DL twice
- Zara move DR, Zara attack DR+DR
- Zara attack DR+DR twice
- Zara move UR, Zara attack DL+DL
- Zara attack UR (kill), Zara heal DL
- Zara attack DL+DL twice (kill)
- Zara move UL, Zara move DL
- Zara move DL, Zara attack DR+DR
- Zara attack DR+DR twice
- Zara attack DR+DR (kill), pass
- Zara attack DR twice
- Zara attack DR twice (kill)
Level 5
Here we have a Notel Eks with a lot of health and attack. Everyone except Zara would have to take damage every turn while fighting. Fortunately, Zara can attack from a distance of 3 now.

- Angela move UL+UL, Angela move UL
- Angela move DL, Angela attack UL
- Angela move UL, Angela attack UR
- Angela move DR, Angela attack UR (kill)
Level 8
We now have two more friendly units: there's Camie, who has a long-range attack like Zara, although it doesn't put up any barriers, and there's Cage, who is pretty standard.
- Camie move D, Camie attack DL+DL (kill)
- Camie move U, Camie attack DL+DL

- Angela attack DL (kill), Cage move DL+DL
- Cage move DR, Cage attack DL
- Beverly move DL+DL+DL, Beverly fireball UL
- Beverly move DL, Beverly attack UL (kill)
Level 9
There are four trolls and a scorpion with 200 health, so we have to deal a lot of damage here. Keep your long-range units safe, because they're the most useful.
- Katrina move DL+DL, Angela move D
- Camie move D+D, Camie attack DR+DR
- Katrina attack D, Katrina move DR
- Katrina attack L, Katrina move UL
- Katrina heal, Katrina attack D
- Katrina attack D twice (kill)

- Cage attack UR (kill)
Episode II
Alright, you now have the medium badge, and 10 of 30 levels completed. This episode has 10 more levels, for a total of 20 when you're done. Again, these levels aren't random, so just follow these steps and you'll have no trouble.
Level 1
Here we see two new enemies, the Naga (high movement and attack) and Babb (high health and diagonal attack).
- Camie move R, Camie move U
- zara move UR, pass
- Zara attack UR+UR+UR twice
- Cage poison UL, Cage attack UL (kill)

- Zara move UL, Zara attack UR+UR
- Zara move DL, Camie move R
- Camie attack UL+UL+UL twice

Level 2
This is tricky, only one unit against five enemy Bens. But with good tactics it's not as bad as it seems.
- Katrina move DL+DL, Katrina move DL
- Katrina poison UL, Katrina heal
- Katrina attack UL twice (kill)
- Katrina move UR+UR, Katrina attack U
- Katrina attack U, Katrina move DL

- Zara attack DR+DR+DR (kill), Beverly move DR
- Beverly single target fireball DR (kill), Angela move DR
- Angela move UR, Angela attack DR
- Angela attack DR twice
- Angela move DL, Angela attack DR
- Zara move DR+DR, Zara attack DR+DR+DR
- Zara attack DR+DR+DR twice

- Beverly attack DL twice
- Zara move UR, Zara attack DR (kill)
- Zara move DR, Zara attack DL+DL
- Cage move R, Cage move DR
- Zara attack DL+DL, Cage poison D
- Pass twice (kill)
Level 4
Katrina against one supercharged Ben. The key here is the difference in movement ability.
- Pass
- Katrina poison DR, Katrina move U
- Katrina attack D, Katrina move UL
- Katrina attack DL, Katrina move U
- Katrina heal, pass
- Katrina move DL, Katrina attack L
- Katrina attack DL, Katrina move R
- Katrina move DL, Katrina attack L
- Katrina attack DL, Katrina move UL
- Katrina attack DL, Katrina move R
- Pass twice
- Katrina heal, pass
- Katrina attack DL, Katrina move U
- Katrina attack D, Katrina move UR
- Katrina move DL, Katrina poison D
- Katrina attack DL, Katrina move R (kill)
Level 5
The toughest thing here is the Huro, with 200 HP and a pretty good attack range.
- Zara move UL, Zara attack DL+DL+DL
- Cage attack DL twice (kill)
- Zara attack DL+DL+DL (kill), Angela heal Cage
- Zara move UL, Zara attack DL+DL+DL
- Zara attack DL+DL+DL twice
- Zara attack DL+DL+DL twice
- Zara attack DL+DL+DL twice
- Zara attack DL+DL+DL twice
- Zara attack DL+DL twice
- Zara attack DL (kill), Zara move DL+DL+DL
- Zara move DR+DR, Angela move DL+DL+DL
- Zara attack DR+DR twice
- Pass twice
- Pass twice

- Zara attack UR+UR, Zara move UL+UL
- Angela heal D, Zara attack DR+DR+DR
- Pass twice
- Pass twice
- Zara move DR+DR, Zara attack UR+UR
- Zara attack UR+UR, Zara move UL+UL
- Zara attack DR+DR+DR (kill), pass
- Pass twice
- Pass twice
- Angela team heal, Zara move DR+DR
- Zara move DR, Zara attack UR (kill)
Level 6
This is another "Katrina vs." level. Except for the Peatin, all the enemies hit pretty hard here, so you absolutely need to kill them one at a time.
- Katrina move UL+UL+UL, Katrina move DL+DL
- Katrina attack UR, Katrina move L
- Katrina attack DR twice (kill)
- Katrina heal, pass
- Katrina move UR, Katrina attack UR
- Katrina attack UR (kill), Katrina move D
- Katrina move UR+UR+UR, Katrina poison UL
- Katrina attack UL (kill)
Level 7
Yet another "Katrina vs." level, with 5 enemies this time. This strategy is from youtube user caterpie: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n09MKkTo0pc.
- Katrina attack D twice (kill)
- Katrina attack L, Katrina heal
- Katrina poison L, Katrina move UL+UL+UL
- Katrina move L, pass
- Katrina attack DR (kill), pass
- Pass twice
- Pass twice
- Katrina attack DR twice (kill)
- Katrina heal, Katrina attack DR
- Katrina attack DR (kill), Katrina move DR+DR+DR
- Katrina attack R, Katrina move D
At this point both you can just keep passing, because the troll will just move back and forth. The game's "sudden death" thing will start soon, which means you and the troll will take 4 damage a turn. So now you can just wait it out, and heal when necessary; eventually the troll will die.
Level 8
Another Huro, but this time we don't have to face it head on. This strategy is based on one from caterpie: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EG333q9pbC4.
- Angela move UR, Zara attack UR
- Angela attack UL, Zara attack UR
- Zara move DR, pass
- Angela move UL, Angela attack UL
- Angela move UL, Angela attack UR (kill)
- Angela move DR, Angela attack UR
- Zara heal Angela, Angela move UL
- Angela move UR, Angela attack UL
- Angela move UL, Angela attack UR
- Angela team heal, Angela move D
- Angela attack UR twice
- Angela move UR, Angela attack UL (kill)
- Angela move UR+UR, Zara move U+UR
- Zara move U+R, pass
Just like the previous level, we can now just keep passing and wait for the enemy to die. Make sure to have Zara and Angela heal each other and use team heal (Angela is at very low health, so heal her first).
Level 9
Now it's Zara against two Huro units. This is another strategy from caterpie: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5A5yZiheBlA.
- Zara move UR+UR, Zara attack UR+UR+UR
- Zara move DR, Zara attack UR+UR+UR
- Zara move UL+UL, Zara attack UR+UR
- Zara attack UR+UR+UR, Zara attack UR+UR
- Zara attack UR+UR twice
- Zara attack UR+UR (kill), Zara move U+R
- Zara move L+D, Zara heal UR
- Zara move D, Zara attack UR+UR+UR
- Zara attack UR+UR+UR twice
- Zara attack UR+UR+UR twice (kill)
Level 10
Another boss battle. This strategy is from Kongregate user Zerris: http://www.kongregate.com/forums/15-zening/topics/42326-zening-boss-fights-episode-1-and-2.
- Katrina move DL+DL+DL, Katrina poison DL
- Zara move DL+DL+DL, Zara drain DL+DL+DL (kill)
- Zara attack DL+DL+DL, Zara heal DL (2 kill)
- Katrina heal, Zara attack DL+DL+DL
- Zara attack DL+DL+DL, Katrina move UR+UR+UR
- Zara attack DR (kill), Zara move R
- Zara attack DL+DL+DL (kill), Katrina move DL+DL+DL
- Katrina attack L (kill)
Episode III
There are 5 more levels here, bringing the total up to 25 out of 30 when you're done. I think you're supposed to be fighting against another user in this episode, but very few people play Zening nowadays, so it's much more likely you will fight a computer. These strategies will reflect that. When fighting the computers, there doesn't seem to be much randomness in this episode.
Level 1
Another strategy from caterpie: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oRrqaqdMrFI.
- Katrina move DL, Zara move DL
- Zara attack DL+DL+DL, Zara move U+L
- Katrina attack D twice (kill)
- Zara heal Katrina, Katrina attack DL
- Katrina attack DL twice (kill)
Level 2
Another strategy from caterpie: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D7F9qs67DHY.
- Zara move UR+UR, Zara attack UR+UR+UR

- Katrina heal, Zara move DR
- Zara attack UR+UR+UR, Zara move UL
- Katrina move UR+UR, Katrina attack R
- Katrina attack DR twice
- Katrina move DL, Katrina attack DL (kill)
- Cage drain UL, Miri heal Cage

- Cage attack DR, Zara attack DL (kill)
- Camie attack DL+DL+DL (kill), pass
- Miri attack D, Camie attack DR
- Miri attack D (kill), Zara move DL
- Zara move DL, Zara attack DL+DL+DL
- Zara move D, Zara attack DL+DL+DL
- Zara attack DL+DL+DL, Zara heal DL
- Zara move DL+DL+DL, Zara attack UR
- Zara attack UR+UR+UR, pass
- Zara move UL+UL+UL, Miri teleport to U of enemy
- Miri attack D twice (kill)
Level 4
6 enemies and 6 allies... and if you are careful, it's not too hard. This level seems more random than most, so I can't give a series of steps that's guaranteed to work. Start by having Camie attack DR+DR+DR twice, because this will give you an instant kill, which is a great start.
Level 5
You're surrounded, but it's not as bad as it seems. This strategy is from caterpie: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_RD4JTWfrkg.
- Camie attack DL+DL twice (kill)
- Camie attack DL+DL+DL twice
- Camie attack DL+DL+DL twice (kill)
- Miri attack U twice (kill)
- Katrina attack DR twice (kill)
- Beverly single target fireball DR, Katrina attack D
- Beverly attack DR twice (kill)
- Miri teleport to upmost square, Angela attack UL
- Angela attack UL twice
- Angela attack UL, Angela move UR+UR
- Miri teleport to UR of Angela, Angela heal Miri
- Miri attack L twice
- Miri attack L twice
- Miri attack L (kill)
Episode IV
Alright, the final episode. Only 5 levels left for the hard badge. This episode is supposed to feature you and another player fighting together. If you can find someone else to do this with you, that's great - it'll be a lot easier. But if you can't, don't worry, because it's still very much possible to complete the hard badge without any help.
This entire episode is very random, so I can't give any more sequences of steps. You can still watch caterpie's videos if you want, but don't expect to be able to follow them step for step, because at some point it will just stop working. And of course, since these episodes are random, you shouldn't get discouraged if you die a few times, and you shouldn't feel bad about restarting. The only way through is patience - you've made it this far, so you can't quit now. The last level is especially tough, and it took me many tries, but it's definitely possible to finish this yourself.
Level 1
You control Katrina and Beverly, and the computer controls Angela and Zara. Watch out for the Probe guys, because they can attack everything around them at once. Restart if Katrina dies, because she's the only way you can heal later on. And don't worry about the Durbin behind the flame until after you've dealt with everything else. If Katrina's alive, you can just wait until it dies from the 4-damage-a-turn sudden death feature.
Level 2
The setup of this level is interesting enough: three separate small battlefields, which can only be accessed from each other by teleporting. All of the enemies have teleport spells, and you have Katrina with Team Maelstrom, which moves people around randomly.
The idea here is that the battlefields start out roughly evenly matched - 1v1, 2v2, 1v1. And except for Zara's long-range ability (which you don't control), there's really no room to maneuver away from attacks in this level, which means that in any fight brute force will prevail. So, you are hoping that the Maelstrom makes the battlefields uneven, because if that happens you can use your advantage in one area to quickly wipe out some enemies. Once that happens, a win is practically guaranteed.
Level 3
You control Katrina, and the enemy controls Zara and Angela. It's essential to understand your heal and poison spells here: heal will regenerate a little damage every turn for a while, and poison will splash to every adjacent enemy. The maelstrom isn't especially useful here, but you can use it if you want to.
This level is pretty tricky, but it's a lot easier than it looks, because of splash damage. Here we have some supercharged Peatin enemies who can summon groups of trolls; you will also see some other Peatins that can clone themselves, which is very dangerous since it can literally go on forever. Although each spell takes a couple of turns to recharge, the new clones can cast their own cloning spell immediately, so you can get a lot of enemies spawning - as many as two per turn. The trick here is to attack the newest ones first, and then take down the old ones before they get to use their spell again. Fortunately, the enemy will spend a lot of their time cloning and healing, so you won't get attacked all that much. So just rush in, deal lots of damage, and clear out entire sections of the board before moving onto others.
Level 4
Same three friendly units here. There are three enemies behind walls of fire, and each one has plenty of health. Just focus on one at a time and you'll be fine - the A-bot usually breaks out first, so start with that. The computer Zara can deal plenty of damage without letting an enemy escape the wall, so try to draw attention away from her.
Level 5
This is the final battle, and very difficult. You have only two units; your Katrina, and a computer Zara. There's a wall of fire set up, which wouldn't be a problem except that Zara usually insists on attacking it at the start of the battle, wasting a lot of time. Your enemy is a single Ben with 1000 health, but he can (and will) spawn 3 other 256-health units: Attack Ben, Healer Ben, and Summoner Ben. The attack one is the least dangerous, although he can do a few long-range attacks. The healer is extremely dangerous, because he can heal himself and his allies almost as fast as you can do damage. The summoner is also extremely dangerous, because he has 3 different summon abilities, and each of those monsters will take a few turns to dispose of. The good news is that the summoner can only create new enemies in adjacent squares, so if you get in the right position you can block him from summoning anything.
Now, if you sit there in the starting area and watch what happens, you'll see Ben spawn the Attack Ben and one other unit, which will then move forward and allow him to use his third spawn spell. After that, the summoner will generally spawn all his stuff. There are two basic goals for the start of the battle: killing the healer, and preventing the summoner from spawning more than one enemy. So, on your first turn, you should use Katrina's Team Maelstrom spell. Keep in mind that this is compeltely random, so you really have no idea where your units will end up. You're hoping for Katrina to be somewhere near Ben, because you want to get in and attack the healer and/or block the summoner as quickly as possible. So restart if you're more than, say, four or five steps away from him.
Now, once you've got your Katrina in place, you can use your poison on the flame to the DR of Ben, which will poison everything. Then, just start using physical attacks to kill things, and healing whenever you think it might help. Keep in mind that the heal works over a period of a few turns, and that the sooner you use it the sooner you can use it again, so don't hold back with it. Anyway, once you've killed the healer and summoner, it's easiest to finish off the Attack Ben and then the big boss himself. Hopefully during all this Zara has come into the right area and done some attacks to help you out (remember that she is long-distance, which is very useful). Once it's just the final Ben left, your priority is to get rid of all his health before any of his summoning spells regenerate. If they do, it's basically game over, so try to deal as much damage as you can while still being safe. It's okay if Zara dies near the end, but you do need to keep Katrina alive, so stay as far from Ben as you can while still dealing damage, and heal as often as possible.
Alright, good luck! Now, with some time and a bit of trial and error, this badge should be yours.
